Boston Real Estate South End

Boston MA Homes
Boston Real Estate is a rainbow of diversity on many levels. The diversity of Boston South End real estate spans the entire market configuration and price range from small studio condos to large loft condos, as well as single family homes.
The real estate diversity extends to the age of the buildings also so you can “dial in” your level of historic architectural detail. Boston homes in the South End are mostly of mid 19th century bowfronts. These buildings comprise the largest Victorian brick rowhouse district in the US. This area is historically protected by the citizens group, The South End Historical Society.
The ethnic and socio/economic diversity of the South End is remarkably extensive and makes the area come alive. This diversity is responsible for generating one of the most exciting restaurant areas in the world. Tremont Street is often called "Restaurant Row". The South End's range of restaurants include American southern "Low Country", French, Ethiopian, Brazilian, Indian, Italian, Korean, Greek, Middle Eastern, Cuban, Thai, and Japanese among many others.
The South End is also the home of the Boston Ballet and Boston Center of the Arts and Boston University Medical Center. |

Boston South End Condos
While housing in Boston's South End is very expensive ( it's hard to find a 1 bedroom condo for under 400K ) by US and Boston Standards, it's a great "go-to" area from the more expensive Back Bay and Beacon Hill neighborhoods.
Most of the Boston South End Condos have been created by chopping up the Victorian Era single family townhouses, leading to some very unique layouts. Very few are the same, there is something for everyone. On the modern side, the South End has many new residential buildings including the Atelier 505 and Wilkes Passage. Many of these new buildings have all the conveniences including consierge serices and underground parking. Brand new South End Condos have been built throughout the neighborhood. This construction was created to answer the ever increasing demand for housing by Boston University Medical Center doctors, nurses and patients as well as the population of the myriad other hospitals and schools in the area.

 | South End History |
 |
|
Located minutes from the vibrant downtown area of Boston, the South End was originally a narrow strip of land connecting the town of Boston to the mainland. In 1800, the need for more living space arose and plans were laid out for the South End area.
The population grew rapidly in the 1840s and the city decided to fill in the Back Bay and South Bay marshes on each side of the isthmus. Soon, the mercantile class began flocking to the area, building magnificent townhouses that earned them the accolades of the architectural community. Many of the original homes were Italianate in style but it was not unusual to also find real estate in Boston's South End in other styles as well.
In the 1860s, the construction shifted from British with its London-style squares to French urban.
This is why Columbus Avenue was constructed in the style of a Parisian Boulevard. At this time Back Bay was going through the same changing influences.
The South End began to decline in the early 20th century, it was strewn with tenement housing, and was an affordable favorite neighborhood for new immigrants. Later, an African American middle-class neighborhood arose, boasting some of the best jazz clubs in the world. During the Revitalization of the South End in the late 1960s, the South End Historical Society was formed in hopes of saving the neighborhood. Revitalization projects were begun to ensure the preservation of the architectural South End, and many of those wonderful 19th century homes and buildings that are still standing today.
